This curriculum allows our teachers and therapists to utilize best practices as well as developmentally appropriate practices for each child. The Creative Curriculum is an extensive curriculum based on research and theory of child development. Since 1988 Alternatives For Children, a not-for-profit private school, has been at the forefront in providing educational experiences to a broad spectrum of children from across Long Island. Alternatives For Children is approved by the New York State Department of Health as an Early Intervention Program provider under contract with Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and is a New York State Preschool Special Education provider, offering both integrated and self-contained preschool classes.

Alternatives For Children provides a nurturing environment for children that reflects our longstanding commitment to children, their individual needs, and our own high standards.

Taking her cue from the Lady Gaga hit, Born This Way, Music Therapist Lee Morris instilled in her students a valuable life lesson; I’m beautiful in my way, and I was born this way! For their end of the year song, all the children, those with disabilities and their typically developing peers, sang Born This Way, with adapted lyrics, and used American Sign Language to make this song their own.

Alternatives For Children gives all these beautiful children and their families the tools they need, and provides a strong educational foundation, so that they can be successful as they transition to the kindergarten environment.

For the parents of these children, these words affirm what they have always known; that their children are beautiful, despite the fact that they have been classified as a preschool student with a disability.
